SEBI’s new guidelines for Specialized Investment Funds (SIFs) require distributors to clear the NISM Series XIII – Common Derivatives Certification due to the high-risk, high-reward nature of these funds. SIFs can include up to 25% unhedged derivative exposure, and AMCs are allowed to launch seven SIFs (3 equity, 2 debt, 2 hybrid), with strict eligibility requirements, such as having 3 years of existence or experienced fund managers.
The minimum investment for SIFs is ₹10 lakh, and investments in mutual funds and SIFs cannot be combined for this threshold. SIFs may also have restricted liquidity, with redemptions allowed on a daily, weekly, or maturity basis, and subscription periods at the AMC’s discretion, making it crucial for distributors to understand the unique risks and complexities involved.
